Taiwan RedEye Biomedical Inc. has launched the world’s first
photoelectric hemoglobin sensor
Combined with the background of ICT in Taiwan, RedEye developed the world’s first hemoglobin sensor through optical technology and specific arithmetic method. This product makes the detection of excrement occult blood is no longer a patent of medical institutions. Nelson Yan, the founder of Taiwan RedEye Biomedical Inc., has more than ten years experiences of semiconductor industry. In order to take care of the health of family members, he changes his field from semiconductor industry into biomedical. The company has only established for two year. However, RedEye becomes the only Taiwan team in the category of overseas health care of Plug and Play. The product attracts some bathroom equipment companies from Japan and America come to us for cooperation.

Taiwan RedeEye bIomedical Inc. located in a brand-new commercial building. This company which has been founded for only 2.5years is ready to make a breakthrough in Taiwan and even the global Bio-ICT industry with the world’s first commercialized “photoelectric heme sensor”.
Nelson Yan, the founder and the CEO of Taiwan RedEye Biomedical Inc, was a “patent king” of the R&D department in Foxconn Technology Group and has awarded some prizes like “Business Start-up Award”, “Innovation Award” and so on after having got the PhD degree of Department of Electronics Engineering, Institute of Electronics in NCTU.
Nelson Yan, who has stayed in the field of semiconductor industry, was inspired by the health status of family members to make good use of his expertise and create a new value in the field of health.
“Several years ago, my father in law was diagnosed with bladder cancer and it was on the stage three when he was confirmed.”said by Nelson. In Taiwan, the number of suffering from the colorectal cancer not only ranked first in cancer but one third of people were on the stage three or four once they were confirmed. This is the severity that seldom people know.
According to the allowance of Health Promotion Administration, citizens aged 50 to 74 are recommended to do the iFOBT every two years. However, if people are not bleeding when collecting the specimen, they might still miss the chance of early detection for early treatment.
Dr. Nelson started to consider that if there is a home-used tool which can detect the occult blood in our urine and feces, can people greatly reduce the risk that people who have cancer like bladder cancer and colorectal cancer usually go to the hospital after they found obvious bleeding and are confirmed on the middle or late stage of the cancer. Therefore, knowing that the iFOBT is still a gap that doesn’t meet the medical needs, Dr. Nelson decided to develop the apparatus.
Create the product by semiconductor optics technology and patent algorithm
In order to make occult blood in urine or feces can be detected at home, there has been a kind of test paper product for detecting heme abroad. However, it didn’t become widespread due to the threshold of accuracy and noise at home.
Dr. Nelson said that there is a lot of impurities in excrement, therefore, test paper can’t become a best detection tool in the household field which is hard to get rid of impurities.
Therefore, he used his specialty in the field of optics to create the photoelectric hemoglobin sensor. With the optical principle, users only need to put the front edge of sensor into the toilet water and wait for 10 sec
Before using this lightweight handheld sensor, users need to put the disposable filter on the detecting area. It can separate the solid impurities when detecting excrement to avoid the interruption of noise. After using it, the filter can be detached into the toilet through redeye’s special design on the neck of the product then flush it. It is sanitary and convenient for users to use.
Dr. Nelson said that the core technique of this sensor is its inner optical element. Dr. Nelson and his high school classmate who was a software engineer and specialize in electronics spent three years developing this photoelectric sensing technology.
In order to use this technique on detecting occult blood, it need to cross the threshold of eliminating noise and finding out the heme signal to analyze. All of these things rely on the algorithm which was developed before RedEye’s establishment.
This technology adopts the CMOS image sensor chip with semiconductor process goes with several kinds of optical elements with semiconductor process and makes them become a minimize optical sensing module. We use the way that detect the spectrum and then analyze it with algorithm to determine the outcome is positive or negative.
Home detection goes with long-term tracking through APP
“In the laboratory, the highest sensitivity that we can detect only need the hemoglobin at a concentration of 2.5 ppm. Due to the complex environment in actual use, we adjust our sensitivity followed the real environment.”, Dr. Nelson said.
RedEye estimates that the competition barrier will exist at least one to one and half years. Although the appearance of our product might be imitated by others, but the biggest barrier is the development of software. On February 26th, this photoelectric hemoglobin sensor was launched on the crowdfunding platform, zeczec, in Taiwan and reached the goal of raising 1 million Taiwanese dollars at the end of March. The first order has been shipped from April 24th.
The apparatus which launched by RedEye is the version that simply shows the single detection outcome. “We choose the version that can be used at home instead of the version of professional medical equipment because RedEye wants to compensate for the inconvenience of registering and waiting in the hospital” Dr. Nelson said”. Next version of this home-used apparatus will collocate with the app. The users can send the outcomes of detections to the app and do the long-term records to observe that if there is any situation of periodic bleeding.
Besides, RedEye is developing a product that can detect the urine sugar, urine protein, and so on to help people find out diabetes or kidney disease earlier. Also, RedEye’s products are going to apply for FDA and are developed towards the direction of medical equipments to elevate the product value.
